Palancar

Some of the better known reefs of Cozumel are the deep pinnacles and caves of Palancar and Columbia down on the southern end of the island. These are deeper areas of the reef with the average ‘good stuff’’ down at 80 to 100 feet. The best word to describe these giant structures is ‘majestic’. It’s easy to see why these areas are known worldwide as one of the most awe inspiring places to dive. As elsewhere, when you get in the water here, the current is obvious, but, once you hit 60 feet it settles down and there is little to no current on down into the pinnacles themselves. You can take your time and cruise as leisurely as you want in and out of the tall spires and into the caves and arches. As you swim through the convoluted corridors you will almost always come head to head with one or more of the many turtles who regularly cruise the pillars. One of the most common denizens here, these guys will be around with you all the way up to the surface as you make your safety stop.

There are literally thousands of photos that could be shown for Palancar, so these are but a few of what we have on file. The huge columns and crevices and caves seem to go on forever. You can’t even come close to seeing all of this one area in only one dive. It is a bit unusual to see a lobster out for a stroll 90 feet down in broad daylight. This one was not only out walking but really didn’t seem to mind a close approach.

The main and best known area of Palancar is pictured above. However, the northern end of this area tends to shalloer reef and is broken into subparts. Because they are gravitating towards shallower reef, the topography changes.    Palancar Bricks       Palancar Caves
