While Cozumel diving is technically drift diving, ie. you are diving in a current and ‘drift’ with it in a unidirectional fashion, the current is seldom strong. You won’t want to fight it and swim against it upstream, but you can stop and observe without much difficulty. Generally, when you reach an outcropping of reef, the flow calms somewhat around the coral making it feasible to stop. This is especially true in the areas where you find coral heads with small caves winding through them. Once inside the caves you find little or no current and can spend whatever time you wish exploring without the nuisance of fighting the current. These small caves are, at spots, intricate and completely accessible to most divers. They are, for the most part, between 40 and 60 feet of depth and are worth repeated visits.
