Felipe Xicotencatl

C-53

Usually called simply “The Cozumel Wreck”, the Felipe Xicotencatl or C-53 is a 184 foot retired Mexican Naval vessel which was sunk June 5, 2000 as an artificial reef (which usually translates into ‘diver magnet’). She lies in 80 feet of water with her superstructure rising to 40 feet, and is a very open and easy wreck to explore. Occassionally the current (this is Cozumel) will be strong enough to make it necessary to start on the stern and work towards the bow without a chance to go back.

The C-53 has, in the short time since her sinking, become home to a myriad of sea critters like silversides and large grouper and sponges, but, probably due to the current, has remained reasonably clean on the outside. Overall, this is an excellent wreck dive for those with limited experience and still a great experience for those who’ve ‘been around’.
