Idabel

One of the most fascinating opportunities available in the diving world is located at Half Moon Bay in Roatan, Honduras. There you can get the chance to dive to 2000 feet in a mini sub - a sub built by Karl Stanley called Idabel (After the town of Idabel, Oklahoma where he built it.)

The waters off Half Moon Bay descend below 3000 feet. The chart above gives some idea of the fauna at given depths and the topography of the dropoff. Karl takes his sub out beyond the dropoff so he can descend safely in clear waters since he has limited visibility below the sub. This way he can descend freely and then drive over to the wall and ascend at his leisure.

Idabel hangs in her dock just out from Karl’s house. Karl accesses the dock by sliding down a rope from his upstairs (Sorry I missed that shot but I was too slow.) I won’t take time to give a detailed history or bio for Karl since you can read about him and Idabel on www.stanleysubmarines.com, and I think it would be well worth your time.

There is room for two passengers in Idabel in the forward bubble while Karl ‘drives’ from his perch in the turret.

As you drive out to the dropoff, you get to see Karl’s first sub (a two man version) where he retired it in a fitting spot underwater where it was meant and built for.
