Coxen’s Hole is the metropolis of Roatan, and a good visit on your last day when you can’t dive that afternoon before flying. This is your chance to grab that unforgettable treasure you want to take back to amaze everyone back home with the solid proof of where you’ve been. If this is your first trip to a third world country, you may be in for a shock. Disease is prevalent throughout these countries as sanitation is still a foreign concept. Strangely enough, many of these areas have no sanitary facilities to protect the populace from disease, but they got cable! While you might be somewhat appalled at the conditions, remember that these people live this way, were raised this way, and feel no shame at how they live. In fact, they are often quite proud of what they have, even though it is little by our standards. The one thing they are definitely is happier than the average American, and live less complicated lives because of it. Sometimes the housing can be questionably stable and it is disconcerting to see a cow carcass being butchered in the street and the meat hung out to air with the flies, etc. invited to the party - especially if you consider this might just be the steak you’re having for dinner that night. Except for the main drag which was never really meant for automobiles, where you will find actual enclosed stores, most of the products are displayed for sale in the open. Children begging is a constant scene, and they can come up with the most varied stories as to why they need a dollar and not the other kids. But, as those of you who have been before and even to other areas down south know, this is the reality of these areas - not the exception. These are a proud and extremely friendly and helpful people, and getting to know them is a gratifying experience.
