Riviera Maya

Where the world ended December 21st, 2012! According to the Mayan calendar, the world as we know it was to end when the rising sun shines through the small square window in the middle of the main building here on December 21st., 2012. True or not, it drew a huge crowd of people from around the world to come and await the ‘end’.

Riviera Maya covers the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of the Quintana Roo District of Mexico. The entire coast is one long string of huge all inclusive resorts trying to sell you shares in their property. Once you get past the sales pitch, it is a marvelous place to visit. The accomodations are superb, the amenities are delectable, the people are very friendly, and the price is right! In the space of an hour’s drive from Cancun to Tulum, there are a myriad of great places to stay - all on the beach.

Most any place you choose to stay is in easy driving range of the cenotes. You do have to drive up to Cancun to take the boats for the hour and a half ride to the whale shark areas. Marina El Cid is in Puerto Morelos roughly half way between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen where Dive Mexico is located. We spent four days in Riviera Maya and did two cavern dives each day for three days. I saved the whale sharks till the last day before flying as it is snorkeling and no diving is involved. I have dived the caverns in the Bahamas before, but there is no comparison either in beauty or scale.
