Dreams Puerto Aventuras

Just so everyone doesn’t think all I have to do is travel around the Caribbean and have a great time, I thought I would show you the dark side of this job. On a recent trip to Puerto Aventuras very little more could have gone wrong. Had this been your trip and everything were to have gone south as much as this one did, I think you would at least be kinda disappointed. But this is a good example of what can go wrong in the Caribbean where, unlike the brochures claim, there is real weather and it can be just as unpredictable as anywhere else - things do go wrong. I have been through three hurricanes on “vacations” to the area. It started raining while we were on approach to the Cancun Airport and continued to rain for two days and nights. At left you can see what we faced from our seventh floor balcony at our four star resort, Dreams Puerto Aventuras. I mention the seventh floor and the four stars not to impress you but to emphasize that you’d think things would still be reasonably comfortable - albeit no diving. After raining for two days and nights it turned out that the lower floor of the hotel ended up with four feet of water in it and many of the facilities flooded out and unusable. The water flooded out some of the restaurants, the gym and some lesser amenities but most of all it ‘killed’ all the elevators so for three days we had to hike the stairs seven floors several times a day. We had to be sure when we went down to eat that we ate enough to sustain us for the climb back.

This is what we faced for the first two days and nights!

But then as predictable as always, the sun came out and dried out the world for the beautiful weather you want to expect from a Caribbean paradise. I must commend the staff for their heroic efforts to please the guests during this mini disaster - I’ve never experienced a more pleasant and helpful staff anywhere.Dreams is a very pleasant and laid back resort where relaxation is the key to everything. They have a small but adequate and pristine beach for the loungers in your crowd and, of course, great service on or off the beach. Being an all - inclusive resort with four restaurants on property, there is always plenty to eat and multiple choices. Bars are everywhere since all liquor and food are included.

Puerto Aventuras beach and hotel.

The beach bar was a very relaxing place to either have coffee in the morning or a coctail at sunset. Then there was a small wading pool next to it to cool off in when the sun got  to be a little too much. One of the features of the beach front is a large Palapa which serves as a wedding chapel. We got to watch a wedding taking place while we were there and it truly is a beautiful setting  and backdrop for nuptials.
