When you stand outside your room and look up at Mount Scenery, it really doesn’t look like all that bad a climb. It’s quite deceptive and not till you’re about a quarter of the way up do you realize just how far it is to the top and how steep a climb it is. If there weren’t stone steps on the steepest areas, it would literally be climbing hand over hand. There is one - count them: one - rest stop about halfway up.

It.s not till you are halfway or so up that you can look back and see how truly steep this island is. When you look back down at houses which are still hundreds of feet above the sea and realize you still gotta long ways to go as you reach the only rest stop at the halfway point.

Halfway Up - and YES, It’s as Steep as It Looks!

But, in the end, it was worth the work. Save this for your last day before you leave because your legs are GONNA be sore!

As you get within the last 50 feet of the top, there is a very tight and very muddy crawlthrough to get to the peak. This is a hands and knees crawl and when you come out the top after about 20 feet, you can see the concrete monument which crowns the mountain. I’m sure glad I didn’t have to carry the concrete up there.
