Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

There,s a new ‘sport’ going on now - Spearfishing for Lions!

Since the influx of this predator from the Pacific, Lionfish have been decimating local fish populations. In particular, snapper and grouper fingerlings are being eaten before they have a chance to mature. Since this beautiful but deadly fish eats and reproduces year round without any natural enemies, their populations have skyrocketed. Divers all over the Caribbean have started to spear them without mercy as to size. The word is if you see it - kill it. This might sound harsh but they really are becoming a menace to the reefs and the commercial fishing industry which is an economic mainstay for the Caribbean region.

While some purists may feel this is somewhat unsporting to go after them with spears and scuba, only the younger fish usually stay in shallow water while the larger adults tend to stay in areas 60 to 100 feet deep. Since their main tactic to feed is to hang upside down in caves and under ledges to attract small fry to what looks like seaweed to hide in for safety, anything else is out of the question. The good news is that they are absolutely delicious and are beginning to be served at local restaurants. Obviously they aren’t always available due to the method of securing them, but well worth the try. The meat is purest white and sweet without any strong fish taste.

By the way, while Lionfish are truly beautiful to look at, never forget when swimming near one that their spines are very poisonous and the venom is quite painful.
