Divers Net Title b

The Island has a long list of places to eat featuring many different cuisines describing them all. Needless to say, if you want good food, it’s there. I have already stated my concerns about trying to dive at Lac Bay. It has some very attractive reef off the inlet which is well worth diving - however - it is definitely for the VERY experienced diver. Many divers and swimmers have drowned trying to fight the waves and currents at the mouth of the bay. Many more have come ashore bloody and bruised if they’re lucky from the pounding they got trying to swim through the rough water over the shallow coral heads.. I know a lot of divers - some very experienced - who say they won’t try that again. Having said that, however, one experience about Lac Bay does deserve mentioning.  Lac Bay is a beach/ cove area where locals go on Sundays to picnic, swim, drink beer, and party! And what a party! Take an afternoon and drive down. Carloads of families show up with the kids for the day. In addition to the draw of the beach, there are two bandstand areas which serve food, cold beer, and loud and local musical groups. While I was there one band was playing mariachi music while the other was pumping out a mix of island and rock. After a few beers, anyone became a good dancer and everyone was welcome to join in. If there is any doubt as to the main course here, the mountains of conch shells attest to the productivity of the shallow waters in the cove. You’ll find the local folks a happy and friendly bunch to party with!

The road to Lac Bay might make some think they are lost.

Update: On a recent return to Bonaire I was sorry to find that much of Lac Bay’s structures are missing from recent hurricane damage. Folks still gather there on weekends but the dancehall is gone. We’ll be back down there in September, so maybe there will be good news.
